POST-GAME NOTES

New Jersey defeated the Dallas Stars, 5-2, in the first of two meetings between the clubs this season.  The clubs will meet for the second and final time in the regular-season on Jan. 4 at American Airlines Center.

Tonight was the Devils’ first of a season-long, six game, home-stand (Dec. 14-29).  They will face-off next against the Anaheim Ducks in Sami Vatanen’s first game against his former club and also will be both Adam Henrique and Joseph Blandisi’s first career games since being traded to Anaheim.  The two-players swapped teams on Nov. 28.

Full Trade: New Jersey acquired defenseman Sami Vatanen and a conditional third-round selection in the 2019 or 2020 NHL Draft from Anaheim in exchange for Adam Henrique, Joseph Blandisi and New Jersey’s third-round selection in the 2018 NHL Draft, Nov. 30.

The game also was the second-half of New Jersey’s eighth of 16 back-to-back sets in the 2017-18 season. The club collected three of a possible four points; Dec. 14 at MTL, 1-2 OT.

Entering the game, New Jersey is 5-2-0 overall (2-1-0 at home) against the Central Division and is 9-5-2 overall against the Western Conference.

NJD was 1-5 on the power-play and were 1-8 overall in this back-to-back set (Dec. 15 at MTL., 0-3).  The Devils’ power play unit was 2-3 this evening.  It was the first time in four consecutive games that the club was not perfect on the PK. (12 for 12, Dec. 9-12).

The Devils were out-shot, 26-30, but held Dallas to just five shots during the second period.  After 40 minutes, New Jersey led the Stars 3-2.

PALMIERI – IR, retro to Nov. 20, broken right foot, 12 games missed.
JOHANSSON – I.R., retro to Dec. 9, ankle bruise, 3 games missed.

Brian Boyle led New Jersey with 3PTS this evening to match his career-high for points in a game (also; Dec. 27, 2010, NYR 7 vs NYI 2).  His first goal of the night, New Jersey’s sole power play tally/game winner, was the 100th goal of his NHL career.  The alternate captain also assisted on Nick Lappin’s score in the third to put the club ahead, 4-2, before driving-home the win with an empty net goal with two minutes remaining in the contest.

Boyle also collected a season-high, 12 penalty minutes, (2 minor for unsportmanlike conduct and 10 minute misconduct), after scoring on the power-play, out-manning Dallas d-man, J. Klingberg for a loose puck in front of the net.  He has surpassed the 500 PIM mark in his NHL career. Ha 492 career PIM, entering the contest.

Brian Gibbons continued adding to his most offensively-productive year, notching two assists on the evening. He has 4PTS (1G-3A) over his last three games. At 98GP, needs just 2GP to reach 100 in NHL career.

Nick Lappin notched his first goal of the season in his second game since being recalled from Binghamton (AHL) on Dec. 13.

Andy Greene, Will Butcher, Jimmy Hayes and Pavel Zacha each added one assist tonight. Hayes has points in two-straight, home-games (2A), while Zacha is 4GP away from 100 in his Devils/NHL Career.

Blake Coleman scored the his fourth goal of the season with just 54 second remaining in the opening frame.  Steven Santini opened the scoring for NJD at 4:28 of the first period with his second goal of the season.

Cory Schneider made his third consecutive start in net and second in less than 24 hours (Thursday’s game at MTL was 7:30 PT ET start).  He notched his 13th win of the season, stopping 29 of 30.
