The Devils lost, 4-3 OT, to their cross river rival, NY Rangers. Despite the loss the Devils have earned three of a possible four points during their seven-game preseason. The Devils and Rangers will face off once more on Saturday, September 23 at Prudential Center at 7:00 PM
Tonight was the first and only ‘back-to-back’ scenario for the Devils in this preseason. The Devils had recovered from a one-goal deficit three-times to ultimately force overtime play when forward and professional tryout Jimmy Hayes was able tip a Damon Severson point shot over the left glove of Rangers’ goaltender Alexander Georgiev.
For the second consecutive game the Devils only had one faceoff violation while New York had three.
The Devils managed to score their first power play goal of the season when Brian Gibbons knotted the game at two-apiece at 7:15 of the second period.
The Devils had a preseason-high 23 penalty minutes.
Each club registered 29 shots on net.
Jimmy Hayes skated in his second consecutive game of the preseason tonight against his brother Kevin Hayes. Jimmy Hayes had a two-point-night with one goal and one assist in 12:40 of action.
Devils’ defenseman and captain Andy Greene led all players on both NJ and NYR with 25:57 minutes of playing time. Greene is entering his third-year as team captain.
Drew Stafford and Tim Erixon each made their unofficial Devils’ debuts tonight at the MSG. Stafford recorded primary assists on Pavel Zacha’s and Brian Gibbons’ (PPG) markers and led New Jersey with four hits.
Pavel Zacha, entering his second full professional season, led all players with 6 shots on goal tonight.
Damon Severson also skated in his second game tonight since signing his six-year contract.
Cory Schneider and Mackenzie Blackwood (OT) split the goaltending duties tonight. Blackwood stopped 11 of 12 shots and was credited with the OT loss. Schneider started the game and was 14-17 on the evening
